From Decision to Direction: Why Following Jesus Is More Than a Moment | Palm City Church
Most of us love the idea of a moment with God. A breakthrough moment. A salvation moment. A powerful worship moment. A moment where everything feels clear, close, and full of hope. Those moments matter.
But they were never meant to be the whole story.
Jesus did not die and rise again so we could have one emotional experience and then go back to life as usual. He came to invite us into something deeper. That is what this new series, Disciple, is all about.
Faith Is Not Just a Moment. Faith Is Movement.
At the end of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus gives His followers some final words. They were not casual. They were full of purpose.
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…”
— Matthew 28:19
Jesus did not say, “Go make believers.” He said, make disciples.
There is a moment where we surrender our lives to Jesus. We are forgiven, made new, justified by grace. But from there, God leads us into a life of growth, surrender, obedience, and transformation. Following Jesus is not just about praying a prayer. It is about walking with a Person.
Faith has moments, but faith is not just moments. Faith is movement.

We Have Reduced Faith to a Moment
For many people, faith has been reduced to a Sunday service, a raised hand, or a spiritual memory from the past. But what was meant to be a lifestyle has often been treated like a life event.
That is one of the clearest burdens in this message. So many of us know God has more, but we are not living in that more. Not because God is withholding, but because we have settled. We have accepted a surface-level Christianity that comforts us without changing us.
The writer of Hebrews speaks directly to this kind of spiritual stagnation. There comes a point where believers are meant to grow up, move deeper, and start helping others grow too. At some point, we have to stop living on spiritual milk and start becoming mature followers of Jesus.
Pause & Reflect: Have you reduced your faith to a past moment or is it actively shaping your present direction? What would it look like for your faith to move beyond memory and into daily movement?
Salvation Is Free. Growth Is Expected.
This is where so many people get confused. We are not saved by effort. We are saved by grace. Jesus has already done what we could never do for ourselves. His finished work on the cross is enough.
But once we belong to Him, growth should follow. Not because we are trying to earn God’s love, but because His Spirit is now at work in us.
God is not asking for behavior modification. He is inviting inner transformation. That process is called sanctification, and it is part of every real life with Jesus. You may not change instantly. You may not change perfectly. But if you are walking with Jesus, you should be changing progressively.
We Often Misunderstand Discipleship
The word disciple can feel heavy. It can sound intense, complicated, or out of reach. But God is not looking for polished people. He is looking for surrendered people.
You do not clean your life up and then come to Jesus. You come to Jesus, and He begins to change your life. Psalm 119 says God’s Word is a lamp to our feet. A lamp does not show the whole road. It gives enough light for the next step.
That is often how God works. He may not show you ten steps today. But He will show you one.
Real Freedom Comes Through Surrender
One of the strongest themes in this sermon is that freedom is found in lordship.
We all want freedom. But often we want freedom without surrender and that is not how the Kingdom works.
Jesus is not only Savior. He is Lord. And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. That means real freedom is not found in having no boundaries at all. It is found in living under the right authority.
God’s boundaries are not there to keep you from life. They are there to lead you into it.
Every step of obedience is a step toward freedom. Every time we resist what God is saying, we stay stuck in the very things we are asking Him to deliver us from.
Pause & Reflect: Where might you be resisting God’s leadership while still asking for His freedom? Is there an area where surrender (not striving) is the step forward?
You Cannot Reflect What You Are Not Pursuing
One of the most powerful passages in the message comes from 2 Corinthians 3.
When we turn to the Lord, the veil is removed. We begin to see clearly. And as we behold Him, we begin to reflect Him.
That is discipleship.
We do not just receive grace for ourselves. We become people who carry His presence into the lives of others. We do not just attend church. We become living evidence that God still changes people.
Three Things Begin to Happen as You Follow Jesus
1. You begin to change
Not all at once, but for real. Your mindset, values, desires, and reactions change. Your life begins to look different because you are becoming more like Jesus.
You may still be in process, but process is not failure. Process is often where God does His deepest work.
2. You begin to experience freedom
Old chains start to break. Old mindsets start to loosen. Old patterns stop defining your future. This does not mean your story disappears. It means your story no longer owns you.
You stop living from open wounds and start living as someone marked by healed scars. What you have been through becomes evidence of God’s redemption instead of proof that you can never change.
3. You begin to make a difference
As God works in you, He starts working through you. You begin to encourage others, serve others, lead others, and help others find the same grace and freedom you are discovering.
You do not have to be finished to be useful. You just need to be following Him.
The More of God You Want Is on the Other Side of Your Next Step
This may be the simplest way to say the heart of the message: The more of God you are looking for is on the other side of your next step.
Maybe for you, that is giving your life to Jesus. Maybe it is finally getting water baptized. Maybe it is joining a group and letting people know the real you. Or maybe it is obeying something God has already been saying for a long time.
Whatever it is, do not settle for less when God has more. Jesus did not call us to admire Him from a distance. He called us to follow Him closely.
And as we do, we discover that faith is not just about one moment that changed our eternity. It is also about a daily direction that changes how we live right now.
Pause & Reflect: What is one next step God has already made clear to you but you haven’t taken yet? What would it look like to act on that this week, even if it feels small?
Closing Invitation
At Palm City, Jesus is our message and people are our passion. That means discipleship is not reserved for the super spiritual. It is for ordinary people who are willing to take a next step with God.
You do not have to have it all together. You do not have to know everything. You do not have to wait until you feel strong.
You just have to turn toward Jesus and keep walking.
